This project was truly a challenge. We actually moved this building across Berkeley. It was moved from MLK at Alcatraz to its current and final location on Sacramento Street. The permits and coordination with the utility companies and the City of Berkeley alone for the move of the building made me question why we chose to do this.
I suppose it was one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time, and a challenge which we are always looking for. Oh, and the fact that we got the building for $1. So once we got the building to the site, we raised it up and built commercial space underneath. We also built a newly attached second building with parking on the ground floor.
We ended up with three residential apartments and one commercial retail-office space. This was our first building move (June 1999) and first Mixed-Use Project.
